Mural Procedures

There are typically at least three definable stages for murals: 1) planning and estimating; 2) concept and design; 3) scheduling and execution.

Planning and Estimating

The mural commission begins with a consultation, either in person or over the phone. After gaining an understanding of the client’s needs, basic themes are discussed and suggestions made for the mural. The price of the mural also takes the size and location into consideration. When an estimate is agreed upon, a 30% deposit is required. Travel and accommodation expenses are added to the final payment, along with any adjustments in the cost due to additions or changes made during the process of execution. Final payment is due upon completion of the mural.

Concept and Design

It is the client’s responsibility to provide adequate reference material for the chosen subject matter or topic. Mrs. Hardin then submits a pencil sketch of the composition using the provided reference material. With larger murals it is advantageous to visit the mural site before beginning the composition. On occasion, when a board approval is necessary, Mrs. Hardin will provide a color rendering (to scale) of the mural for an additional charge. This cost varies based on the size of the mural.

Scheduling and Execution

Upon client approval of the mural plan, a work schedule is implemented. Whether working in a home, or a business location, the artist is flexible and can work either in front of people, or alone at night if needed. An average estimate of onsite painting is between one week and one month.

Indoor murals can be painted directly on a wall in either latex house paint or regular artist's oil paint. Panel or canvas sections can be painted in the artist studio prior to installation. Brushes, ladders, and scaffolding will be provided by the artist.

Cheryl Mann Hardin is no longer accepting exterior mural commissions.
